Font Licensing

Overview

The licences below cover the most common ways our fonts are used.

All standard licences are one-time fees, cover worldwide use, and do not expire, unless otherwise agreed.

If you are unsure or your use case is not mentioned below please contact us at hello@peregrinstudio.com and we'll happily discuss the right licence for you.

Desktop License

Our Desktop Licence covers most standard commercial use of our fonts, including brand design, printed material, product design, advertising campaigns, packaging, presentations, signage, social media and general marketing use.

Licence tiers are based on the size of the company or organisation benefiting from the fonts, measured by employee count, not simply by the number of people installing or using them.

Fonts can be installed on multiple devices without limit and used by the licence holder’s employees, as well as designers, agencies, freelancers and other third parties working on their behalf.

If the fonts are being used for an end client’s brand, the licence should match the end client, not the agency, studio or individual purchasing the fonts on their behalf. Licence tiers can be upgraded as needed.

This licence does not cover apps, registered trademarks, broadcast content, TV, film, streaming services or live webfont embedding. These uses require separate licensing.

Web License

A Web License allows you to embed the font software into the code of a website so that you can use it as live text for titles and body copy.

Web Fonts are a one time fee, which is determined by your websites traffic and monthly ‘page views’. If you exceed the limit stated in your Web License tier contact us for a tier upgrade. This licence covers one domain name and any related sub-domains.

You do not need this licence if you are only using the font in images or Gif’s on social channels, for that use you only need a Desktop Licence.

FAQ

Which licence do I need?

For most brand, design and marketing work, you’ll usually need a Desktop Licence.

This covers standard commercial use such as brand identity, printed material, product design, advertising, packaging, presentations, signage, social media and exported graphics.

If you want to use the fonts as live text on a website, in an app, in broadcast content, in film, TV, streaming, or as part of a registered trademark, those uses need separate licensing.

How are Desktop Licences priced?

Desktop Licence tiers are based on the size of the company or organisation benefiting from the fonts, measured by employee count.

They are not priced by the number of people installing or using the fonts.

If a small design studio is creating work for a larger end client, the licence should usually match the size of the end client, because they are the organisation benefiting from the typeface.

Can an agency, studio or freelancer use the fonts on behalf of a client?

Yes. A Desktop Licence allows employees of the licence holder, as well as designers, agencies, freelancers and other third parties, to use the fonts on the licence holder’s behalf.

The important point is that the licence should match the company, organisation or brand the work is being created for.

Can I install the fonts on multiple devices?

Yes. Our Desktop Licence allows the fonts to be installed on multiple devices within the licensed organisation and by third parties working on their behalf.

The licence tier is based on company size, not device count.

Can licence tiers be upgraded later?

Yes. If your company grows, your website traffic increases, or your usage expands beyond the original licence, you can upgrade to the correct tier.

Do I need a Web Licence?

You need a Web Licence if the fonts are embedded into a website and used as live text, such as headings, body copy, navigation or other on-site typography.

You do not need a Web Licence if the fonts are only used in static images, exported graphics, GIFs or social media posts. Those uses are usually covered by a Desktop Licence.

How are Web Licences priced?

Web Licences are priced by the website’s monthly pageviews.

Choose the tier that matches the average monthly traffic of the website using the fonts. If the website later exceeds the pageview limit covered by your licence, you can upgrade to the correct tier.

How many websites does a Web Licence cover?

A Web Licence covers one domain name and its related subdomains.

For example: example.com, www.example.com and shop.example.com.

It does not cover separate, unrelated domain names.

Do I need an App Licence?

You need an App Licence if the fonts are embedded into an app, digital product or software environment where the font files are included as part of the product.

This includes mobile apps, desktop apps, web apps, SaaS products and similar digital platforms.

How are App Licences priced?

App Licences are priced by monthly active users.

If the app grows beyond the licensed usage tier, the licence can be upgraded.

Do I need a Broadcast Licence?

You need a Broadcast Licence for use in TV, film, streaming services, live broadcast graphics, large-scale video distribution, or similar broadcast and entertainment uses.

This is separate from standard social media use, which is usually covered by a Desktop Licence when the fonts are used in exported artwork or video graphics.

Do I need a separate licence for social media?

Usually no. Standard social media use is covered by the Desktop Licence, as long as the fonts are being used in exported graphics, images, videos or campaign assets.

A separate licence may be needed if the usage becomes broadcast, app-based, embedded, or part of a larger platform or product.

Can I use the fonts in a logo?

Yes, logo use is covered by the Desktop Licence.

However, if you want to register the lettering, logo or wordmark as a trademark, a separate Trademark Licence is required.

Can I use trial fonts commercially?

No. Trial fonts are for testing, mockups and evaluation only.

They are not valid for live commercial use, client delivery, websites, campaigns, social media, apps, broadcast or public-facing work.

Are licences one-time fees?

Yes. Our standard licences are one-time fees, unless otherwise agreed.

If your usage later expands beyond the original licence, it can be easily upgraded. Just reach out and we’ll help move you to the correct tier.
